GSLIS Student Award Recipients

Health Sciences Information Management Award

Presented to Marie Sienkewicz and Lisa Wallis by Professor Ed Lomax at Convocation on May 13, 2001

The Health Sciences Information Management Award recognizes an outstanding GSLIS student who shows excellence and has an expressed interest in this area of professional practice. The award was established in 1992 by Dr. Prudence W. Dalrymple; a member of the GSLIS faculty from 1989-1991. This award honors the memory of her father, Victor L. Ward.

This year, there are two recipients of this award: Marie Sienkewicz and Lisa Wallis. Unfortunately, Ms. Wallis, now a resident of California, is unable to attend today's festivities. Happily, Ms. Sienkewicz is here to accept this award.

In the fall of 1999, I had the good fortune to have both of these students in a course that examined emerging trends in health information services. The final project for this course involved the student's individual creation and presentation of an information needs assessment of a specific occupational group in the health sciences.

In each of their outstanding presentations of their assessments, Ms. Sienkewicz who examined the information requirements of veterinarians and Ms. Wallis who was concerned with the requirements of epidemiologists, both Ms. Senkeiwicz and Ms. Wallis made us all aware of their significant interest in each of these areas of the health sciences and their relevance to professional practice in the field of library and information science.

Ms. Mitsuko Williams, Veterinary Medicine Librarian and Associate Professor of Library Administration, had the following to say about Marie and I quote: "I think Marie Sienkewicz is one of the most deserving persons of this award. Her genuine interest in the quality of health care information is evident in her day-to-day work in the Veterinary Medicine Library, whether it is cataloging or reference serviceI am indeed honored to have been associated with her for the past two years."

This is my final semester serving as a member of the faculty here at GSLIS. Among other things, I will miss classroom interaction with GSLIS students as well as that opportunity to learn and acquire knowledge that the classroom provides all instructors.

As one of my last official acts in this capacity and on behalf of my faculty colleagues, it is both an honor and my pleasure to present this year's Health Sciences Information Management Award to Marie and Lisa.

Congratulations to both of you and may you each have continued success in the years ahead.
