The Institute this year will be led by Melissa Cragin, GSLIS assistant research professor, and sessions will be conducted by leading specialists in various fields that are involved in the curation and management of earth and environmental sciences data.

Over the course of the four-day institute, participants will consider issues ranging from best practices for managing and preserving various data types including field data, instrument-generated data, and geographic (GIS) data to questions surrounding multi-scale data collections and dynamic data sets. Participants will have an opportunity to engage with data science experts and information professionals while learning:

  • principles and best practices for data curation activities;
  • approaches to partnering with domain scientists and data communities;
  • current metadata and format standards for the Earth and Environmental Sciences;
  • data publishing;
  • technical aspects of data repository systems and repository development planning.

This year the Institute has invited sessions from leading specialists in the management and curation of research data centric to the Earth and Environmental Sciences. Invited session leaders include:

  • Sheena Beaverson (Illinois State Geological Survey),
  • Ruth Duerr (National Snow and Ice Data Center),
  • John Fereira (Cornell University),
  • Bryan Heidorn (University of Arizona),
  • Vivian Hutchison (United States Geological Survey/National Biological Information Infrastructure)
  • Giri Palanisamy (Oak Ridge National Laboratory),
  • Carole Palmer (University of Illinois),
  • Gail Steinhart (Cornell University Libraries), and
  • Steven Worley (National Center for Atmospheric Research).

Invited panelists include:

  • Jake Carlson (Purdue University),
  • Keith Kaneda (Johns Hopkins University),
  • Mary Marlino (National Center for Atmospheric Research), and
  • Lynn Yarmey (University of Illinois).
