Annual Summer Institute on Data Curation held in early June
The Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship (CIRSS) will host the 2011 Summer Institute on Data Curation at GSLIS, from Monday, June 6, through Thursday, June 9. Twenty-six applicants were accepted to this year’s Summer Institute, with support from the Data Conservancy and the IMLS-funded Data Curation Education Program.
The institute this year will be led by Melissa Cragin, GSLIS assistant research professor, and sessions will be conducted by experts in life sciences data management and leaders in the data curation field.
Over the course of the four-day institute, participants will consider best practices for managing and preserving various data types, questions surrounding multi-scale data collections, and data identity and ontologies. Participants will have an opportunity learn about:
- principles and best practices for data curation activities;
- approaches to partnering with domain scientists and data communities;
- current standards for life sciences data;
- best practices in data management; and
- data services planning (e.g. institutional commitment, collection development policy, repository requirements).
Invited session leaders include:
- Joel Bader (Johns Hopkins University)
- Leslie Delserone (University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries)
- Peter DeVries (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
- Chris Freeland (Missouri Botanical Garden)
- W. John MacMullen (University of Illinois)
- Carole Palmer (University of Illinois),
- David “Paddy” Patterson (Marine Biological Lab, Woods Hole; Data Conservancy)
- Allen Renear (University of Illinois)
- Nick Stover (Bradley University)
- Giovanni Stracquadanio (Johns Hopkins University)
- Carly Strasser (National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis; DataOne)
- Anne Thessen (Marine Biological Lab, Woods Hole; Data Conservancy)
Additional invited panelists include:
- Jim Kreft (Berkeley Library, GSLIS MS student);
- Sarah Wright (Cornell University Libraries)
- Lynn Yarmey (Stanford University Libraries, GSLIS MS student)
