GSLIS provides access to a number of resources through which students and alumni can find information regarding employment opportunities:
- GSLIS Community Forums, which provide current job advertisements from a variety of areas in the library and information science profession;
- Explore Careers, which provides links to professional organizations and job listings in various areas of library and information science;
- GSLIS Advising and Professional Exploration, (login required), which offers advising resources, discussion boards, and online office hours; and
- Alumni Profiles and Alumni-Student Connect, services that foster valuable connections with and among successful GSLIS graduates.
Job seekers also can benefit from using other valuable campus resources, including:
- The U of I Graduate College Career Services Office, which assists University of Illinois graduate students with decision making and planning for their careers and offers sample resumes, walk-in hours, workshops, and consultations;
- The U of I Career Center, which provides general career advising, resources, and information; and
- The U of I Alumni Association's Career Center, a fee-based service that offers career advising, resources, and information for Illinois alumni.
- The Writers Workshop, a free resource to University of Illinois students. The consultants at the Writers Workshop can review cover letters for grammar and structure.
Library Associations and affiliated organizations have developed tools and resources to prepare job seekers for the search, application, interview and salary negotiation process, including:
- ALA's Get A Job Toolkit, which includes resources regarding the search, interview preparation, resume and cover letter writing and salary negotiation.
- Glassdoor.com, a free career resource that helps job seeks, students and employees get an inside look at companies and jobs by providing information regarding company reviews, salaries and interview questions and reviews. This is a give and get service for non-students. Post a review and you have access to all other reviews.
