However, this dataset's use is hindered by its distributed nature: these 2-3 billion data points are stored in thousands of museums, catalog ledgers, databases, and computer systems, and only a tiny fraction of them have even been digitized, let alone published in a usable electronic form. An interdisciplinary informatics approach is needed to mobilize this data -- one rooted not just in biology, but also in a sociotechnical understanding of computing systems.</p><p>In this ERRT, we'll first present three GSLIS-affiliated biodiversity informatics projects that aim to take such an approach:</p><ul><li>Bertram Ludäscher: "Kurator: A Provenance-enabled Workflow Platform and Toolkit to Curate Biodiversity Data"</li><li>Matt Yoder (Illinois Natural History Survey) and Mike Twidale: Semantic phenotypes in the context of TaxonWorks</li><li>Andrea Thomer and Mike Twidale: How Databases Learn -- a survey of long-term database use in natural histroy museums</li></ul><p>We'll then open the session to the broader group for discussion and exploration of links to other LIS-adjacent fields (such as CSCW, data curation) and areas of interest (software and workflow reproducibility, provenance).</p><div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-label">Location:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 242 LIS Building </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventdate"> <div class="field-label">Event Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Wed, 10/22/2014 - <span class="date-display-start">12:30pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">2:00pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/10/22/eresearch-roundtable-data-curation-biodiversity-informatics#comments 9503 at http://www.lis.illinois.edu CIRSS Seminar Series: Laura Dietz http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/10/22/cirss-seminar-series-laura-dietz <p>At this session of the CIRSS Seminar Series, Laura Dietz, post-doctoral researcher and research scientist at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts, will present "Entity Linking with Document Retrieval and Vice Versa."</p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p><p>I will discuss the connection between two seemingly unrelated tasks: Entity linking and ad hoc document retrieval which turn out to be mutually benefiting each other. Entity Linking is the task of disambiguating entity mentions to a knowledge base -- a task typically discussed in NLP literature. In contrast, ad hoc document retrieval is the task of ranking documents be relevance to a given keyword query, which is a core taks in IR and search engines.</p><p>In the first half of the talk I will focus on how to solve the entity linking task. A famous approach is a joint inference approach which is usually carried on a heuristically selected subset of the knowledge base. In work with Jeff Dalton, I could show how an approximation to the joint inference approach can be implemented with IR to optimize over the whole knowledge base at once -- no heuristics necessary!</p><p>In the second half I will explore the inverse direction and show that entity links in the corpus can be effectively leveraged to solve the document retrieval problem. This is harder than generally believed in NLP, simply using the disambiguated entities is not sufficient. We use a combination of different approaches that are based on pseudo relevance feedback to inspect first pass rankings from the text corpus and the knowledge base. From these feedback sets we derive a relevance indicating distribution over entities, types, categories, and keyword terms that allow us to significantly improve on two IR benchmark collections.</p><p><strong>Bio:</strong></p><p>Laura Dietz is a post-doctoral researcher/research scientist working with Bruce Croft at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts. Before that she was working with Andrew McCallum. She obtained her doctoral degree with a thesis on topic models for networked data from Max Planck Institute for Informatik in early 2011, being supervised by Tobias Scheffer and Gerhard Weikum.</p><p><strong>Please note special time and location.</strong></p><div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-label">Location:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 242 LIS Building </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventdate"> <div class="field-label">Event Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Wed, 10/22/2014 - <span class="date-display-start">2:30pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">3:30pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/10/22/cirss-seminar-series-laura-dietz#comments 9500 at http://www.lis.illinois.edu Courseapalooza (Pilot Event) http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/10/22/courseapalooza-pilot-event <p>On-campus students are invited to a small trial-run of an event to join core GSLIS faculty for very short overviews of their spring courses and mingling/discussion. Come out and discuss Jean Dryden's article "The Role of Copyright in Selection for Digitization" from SAA's American Archivist journal. We'll talk about the issues related to copyright restrictions on access to digital archives. How well do archivists need to know copyright law? What are the copyright risks involved in making archival materials available online? What is the best practice for copyright risk-assessment of digital materials? We will discuss these questions and more at the SAA Archives Reading Group!</p><p>Because we're all busy people and it's kind of short notice, please feel free to show up even if you don't have time to read the article. We'll hang out, have a few drinks, and chat about copyright law and digital archives, among other things. </p><p>Article: Jean Dryden. "The Role of Copyright in Selection for Digitization," <em>The American Archivist 77</em>(1); Spring/Summer 2014. This article reports the findings of a study of the impact of copyright on what U.S.archival repositories select for digitization and the extent to which they seek authorization from rights holders. Based on the website content of 96 repositories, 66 survey responses, and 18 interviews, the findings reveal a wide range of practice. While American repositories are generally conservative in that they digitize holdings that present no copyright complications, there is evidence of a shift from an item-level copyright analysis approach to a bolder risk-assessment approach that may better achieve the archival mission to make holdings available for use. The article identifies tools to support a risk-assessment approach and suggests areas of further research to identify best practices.</p><div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-label">Location:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Quality Bar, 110 N Neil St, Champaign </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-sponsor"> <div class="field-label">Sponsor:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Society of American Archivists Student Chapter </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventdate"> <div class="field-label">Event Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Thu, 10/23/2014 - 7:00pm</span> </div> </div> </div> http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/10/23/saa-archives-reading-group-meeting#comments 9507 at http://www.lis.illinois.edu Spring 2015 Registration Advising http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/10/23/spring-2015-registration-advising <p>Have questions about registration?
