The panelists will discuss what they have learned about pursuing archival research, and anyone is invited who has an interest in pursuing such research, wants to hear a researcher's perspective on using the archives and special collections maintained by LIS professionals, or is just curious about the historical and material culture research topics the panelists have written about.<br /><br />This roundtable will take place on Friday, April 18, from 12-1pm in Room 126 at GSLIS. The panelists will include GSLIS Professor <a href="/people/faculty/alblack">Alistair Black</a>, GSLIS Assistant Professor <a href="/people/faculty/bmak">Bonnie Mak</a>, and <a href="/people/faculty/adjunct#mcdade">Travis McDade</a>, Associate Professor at the Law Library and Adjunct Associate Professor at GSLIS. These three bring experience from archives and special collections around the world, visited for their research on topics including the history of public libraries, the page as an interface, and rare book crime, among others.<br /> <br /><strong>About the LIS Methods Roundtable Series</strong></p><p>The LIS Methods Roundtable series introduces LIS research methods and the particular issues that arise in the research process. It is directed to all those who may be new to LIS research, or who may have years of experience in some research methods but want to try something new. Roundtables focus on particular methods and includes panelists from the University Library and GSLIS who have experience conducting research with those methods. Panelists discuss how they confronted issues common to projects in their specific experiences: why they chose a particular method, research method and instrument design and revision, negotiating the IRB process, data analysis, and useful tools and resources. A question and answer period gives time for the audience to ask specific questions related to the focus method and the particular research projects that employed them.</p><p>Audio recordings of the previous events in this series, including surveys,  interviews and focus groups, and usability studies, can be found in the <a href="https://www.lis.illinois.edu/newsroom/lectures">GSLIS Lecture Archives</a>. </p><p>If you have questions or comments about this series, including what you would like to see included, please contact <a href="mailto:">"Dan Tracy"-dtracy, at illinois.edu-</a>.</p><div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-label">Location:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 126 LIS </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventdate"> <div class="field-label">Event Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Fri, 04/18/2014 - <span class="date-display-start">12:00pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">1:00pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/04/18/lis-research-methods-roundtable-archival-and-special-collections-research#comments 8989 at http://www.lis.illinois.edu CIRSS Seminar: Marten Duering http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/04/18/cirss-seminar-marten-duering <p><strong>How covert social networks turned citizens into helpers: Support for Jewish refugees in 1940s Berlin</strong></p><p><em>presented by Marten Duering, CDHI Digital History Postdoc at UNC Chapel Hill</em></p><p>This presentation focuses on applying methods from social network analysis and qualitative data analysis adapted to map and explore six case studies. Based on four stories Duering will discuss the roots and internal dynamics which led to the emergence of functioning covert networks within a totalitarian society. Overall, Duering argue for an understanding of helping behavior as primarily a social process as opposed to individual actions driven by moral convictions. He will also discuss the value of network visualizations and their relevance for the exploration of heterogeneous historical sources.<br /><br /><strong>Bio:</strong> Marten Duering is a cultural historian. He has a strong interest in interdisciplinary research methods in the humanities; particularly in history. Currently he is a CDHI digital history postdoc in the Digital Innovation Lab and History Department at UNC Chapel Hill. Marten previously worked as a digital humanities researcher at the Centre virtuel de la connaissance sur l'Europe and was part of the CUbRIK project and the development team for a network-based tool for the analysis of digitized primary sources. Prior to that, he was an ehumanities postdoc at Radboud University Nijmegen where he worked on "Strikes that never happened" with Antal van den Bosch, Iris Hendrickx, and Kalliopi Zervanou. His PhD thesis (2012) introduced a network perspective to the analysis of help relationships among persecuted Jews during the Holocaust.</p><p><strong>Sponsor:</strong> <a href="http://cirssweb.lis.illinois.edu/index.php" target="_blank">Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship</a></p><div class="field field-type-text field-field-location"> <div class="field-label">Location:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 126 LIS </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventdate"> <div class="field-label">Event Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Fri, 04/18/2014 - <span class="date-display-start">4:00pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">5:00pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/04/18/cirss-seminar-marten-duering#comments 8969 at http://www.lis.illinois.edu Declaration for the Right to Libraries Signing Event http://www.lis.illinois.edu/events/2014/04/22/declaration-right-libraries-signing-event <p>Come and show your support for libraries by signing the ALA's Declaration for the Right to Libraries during an open event from 12:00pm - 1:00pm in the East Foyer.
