GSLIS visitor Jim McCusker will present a tutorial on "The Web of Data" on Tuesday, 3/5, from 11:00am - 12:00pm in GSLIS Room 126.

The advent of Web 3.0 is upon us, and it is the web of data. Google's Knowledge Graph and Facebook's Graph Search provide us a glimpse into the future of data management. We will explore the fundamentals of graph-based knowledge using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) as an example, working from denotation and semiotics to knowledge representation and semantics. We will use examples from Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Resources (FRBR) and the World Wide Web Consortium's Provenance Ontology (PROV-O). We will conclude with a discussion of issues in privacy and security.

Speaker Biography:
Jim McCusker works on biomedical semantics. His current interests are data and provenance interoperability in life sciences, especially issues of identity in dynamic systems. He has worked as a software developer for 13 years in bioinformatics, high performance computing, data mining, natural language processing, and supply chain auditing.
