What is double telnet?

Think of it as over-the-shoulder learning, but at-a-distance! The "double telnet" experience lets students watch as the instructor searches in a command-line environment (such as Dialog). Watching a search through double telnet is a little bit like watching a television show: just as you can watch Benson and Stabler solve a case on Law and Order but can't tell them what to do, you can watch an instructor doing a search, but can't interact with the session.

For those who are curious about the name "double telnet," it is a hold-over from the way we used to run sessions. Once upon a time, the instructor would have to open two telnet windows. This was dubbed double telnet and the name has stuck after all these years, despite the fact that we don't need two windows and don't use telnet anymore.

  1. You will need to use a Secure SHell (SSH) program.

  2. Use your SSH program to connect to classrm04.lis.uiuc.edu.  PuTTY will prompt you for your Net ID and password.

Mac and Linux users should ssh to netid@classrm04.lis.uiuc.edu where "netid" is your University of Illinois Net ID.  Do not type "ssh netid@classrm04.lis.uiuc.edu" because that will not work.

If you don't know your Net ID, you can look it up at http://webtools.uiuc.edu/ows/PH.

  3. When prompted, enter your GSLIS domain password.  This is the same password you use to log in to the GSLIS Moodle. For added security, you will not see the password as you type it.

    Type ssh netid@classrm04.lis.uiuc.edu .

  4. Type the command dtview and hit your Enter key.

    Type dtview .

  5. If your instructor has started a session, you will see a summary of the session.

Type dtview to view the session.

  6. Type y and hit your Enter key to "View this session"

Type y to view the session .

  7. You are now watching your instructor's screen.  If you need to get out of double telnet, hold down the Ctrl and C keys at the same time or just close the window.

  8. The double telnet session will also be made part of your class archive.

Please note - You have to wait for an instructor to initiate a session. If you type the command dtview and there's no session running, you will see "Sorry, there are no more interactive sessions currently in progress."
