Wei Presents at Conference in ChinaNovember 5, 2008GSLIS doctoral student, Qin Wei, presented finds of her research at the Eighth National Symposium on Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use (NSBCSU) on Oct. 17-19, 2008 in Zhejiang, China. NSBCSU is an annual conference which is organized by several international committees and relevant departments of China, e.g. The Nature Conservancy (United States), Department of Environmental Protection Division Ministry of Education Science and Technology (China). This year, the conference included eight different sections that covered different issues in biodiversity conservation. Wei delivered two talks on biodiversity data collection and sharing: "Taxonomic Name Recognition in Biodiversity Heritage Library" and "Automatic Metadata Extraction Using Machine Learning." The slides (in both English and Chinese) and abstracts are archived in IDEALS. The URLs are http://hdl.handle.net/2142/9139 and http://hdl.handle.net/2142/9140. Wei is working with the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL)Biodiversity Heritage Library, a part of the Encyclopedia of Life project, to evaluate the effectiveness of taxonomic name recognition algorithms. These algorithms are used to automatic create access points (taxonomic names) to the tens of millions of pages of text that are being created by BHL. Wei plans to pursue similar research for her dissertation. |
