Hicks Awarded Scholarship by MLAMarch 5, 2009GSLIS master's student Elaine Hicks has received a $5,000 scholarship from the Medical Library Association (MLA) for the 2009-2010 school year. Hicks, a full-time LEEP student, is thrilled by the recognition and support for her work. She will travel to MLA's annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, this May to receive her award. Hicks has been working in the field of public health as a health educator for several years. She earned a Master's in Public Health (MPH) in 1994 from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She later discovered medical librarianship while teaching a health course at College of Lake County (CLC). One of the seven areas of competency for health educators is health information. After meeting with medical librarians at a local public health forum, Hicks realized that a degree in library and information science could enable her to work with public health educators, professionals and students to help them improve their information literacy. "As an outreach health sciences librarian, I want to use both library and health education skills to strategically identify and engage both individuals and communities to find, retrieve, analyze and use health information to add value and meaning to life and occupation," Hicks said. "I am looking forward to helping clinicians and students find health and medical literature and teaching them how to use library resources." |
