Plans Underway for Alternative Spring Break 2010August 6, 2009In Spring 2009, GSLIS offered the third Alternative Spring Break program. Almost sixty students were placed in library and museum settings for a week to work with practicing librarians and information professionals. Many of the hosts were GSLIS alumni or others recommended by GSLIS alumni. Students were placed in a number of organizations including: the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, National Library of Medicine, OCLC Eastern, Jefferson Library, Abbott Laboratories, Morton Arboretum Library, Elmhurst College Library, Art Institute of Chicago, Caterpillar, and Heartland Community College Library. Students and hosts alike reported positive experiences. Hosts benefit from students' energy, fresh perspectives, and the inherent rewards of mentoring new professionals in the field. GSLIS and the students are responsible for all travel and housing arrangements and for expenses associated with the placement, so there is no cost to the hosting organization GSLIS will offer the program again for Spring Break 2010, with particular interest in identifying host sites in the Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, central Illinois, or Washington, D.C. areas. If you are interested in hosting a GSLIS student for Alternative Spring Break 2010 (March 22-26), or can recommend someone who may be interested, please contact "Lynn Hanson"-lmhanson, at illinois.edu- by email or by phone at 217-333-6202. Students that are interested in applying for the program are required to apply by October 16, 2009. Applications can be found online. |
