Chip Bruce Named University Distinguished Teacher/Scholar

April 21, 2006

Professor Chip Bruce has been named a University Distinguished Teacher/Scholar for the 2006-2007 school year.

The award recognizes faculty members who represent excellence in teaching, and draws upon their talents to mentor other educators on campus. Each recipient is asked to design a program that will impact and improve the teaching at Illinois.

Professor Bruce will be designing a seminar entitled, "Inquiry for Action and Understanding" in which faculty across disciplines can identify the ways in which the theory and practice of inquiry can benefit their teaching. The seminar will explore the historical and philosophical foundations of inquiry, the ways in which teaching can go beyond the classroom to involve the community, and ways to support interdisciplinary thinking.

"I was very pleased to receive this award, especially knowing how many excellent teachers there are within GSLIS and the University. My hope is that the seminar will provide an opportunity for participants to share their insights with one another and to have the kinds of experiences I've been fortunate to have had with our inquiry-based projects," said Bruce.

The Office of the Provost describes the University Distinguished Teacher/Scholar Program this way: "The objective of the . . . program is to offer talented faculty members not only recognition, but an opportunity to engage in an in-depth analysis of the craft and art of teaching, consider new approaches, and put their insights to work in ways that will benefit significantly their students and the campus community."
