Smith Named President-Elect of ASIS&TOctober 23, 2009GSLIS Associate Dean and Professor Linda C. Smith has been named president-elect of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T). Her term will begin at the conclusion of the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Vancouver on November 11. "I have been involved in ASIS&T since completing my M.S. degree at Illinois in 1972. As a member I value its interdisciplinary character and the connections fostered among individuals involved in research, education, and practice. I look forward to serving ASIS&T in a leadership role over the next three years," said Smith. For over 35 years, Smith has been very involved in ASIS&T activities, including service as a Special Interest Group officer, award jury member and chair, conference program committee member and chair, student chapter advisor, member of various standing committees, Journal of the American Society for Information Science editorial board member, and Annual Review of Information Science and Technology bibliographic editor and advisory committee member. In 1987, the organization honored her with the ASIS Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award. Smith has been a member of the GSLIS faculty since 1977 and is involved in a number of grants funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services concerning library and information science education. Smith will become president of ASIS&T at the conclusion of the 2010 Annual Meeting to be held next October in Pittsburgh. |
