For information on wired or wireless networking at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign campus in general, please visit: http://www.cites.illinois.edu/network/index.html

Wired Access

GSLIS domain network

This network is limited to faculty, staff and researchers using GSLIS or grant funded computers, and for computers in the classrooms and labs.

Wired Access for Personal Computers

There are some wired connections in the GSLIS building that are accessible to non-domain computer users. You will be able to identify the wires and the network jacks for these networks by the green colored cables or a green dot next to the network jack. Just plugging in to the jack will let you access sites on the Illinois domain. You will need your Active Directory Password to use the VPN to connect to sites outside the university domain, to attend LEEP live sessions or to use Instant Messaging.

Wireless Access

UIUCNet

GSLIS has UIUCnet Wireless Access throughout the building. UIUCNet requires either UIUCnet QuickConnect or CITES VPN authentication.

QuickConnect is a quick and easy way to start using UIUCnet immediately on-campus. This method requires making sure you have your wireless network enabled and set to detect available networks and opening a browser window such as Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc. which will take you to the UIUCnet page for authentication. You will need to have a UIUC account to start using Quick Connect. There are some limitations as well. Not all ports will be available which will prevent certain Telnet session operations, chat features necessary to participate in the LEEP Live Sessions will not work and printing to GSLIS printers will not be permitted. You will have to be connected via VPN or the UIwpa2 network in order for these additional services to work correctly.

For more information on how to set this up:
http://www.cites.illinois.edu/quickconnect/index.html

Virtual Private Networking (VPN) provides all port access to wireless users on campus and on-campus identity to off-campus users. The newer version uses your Active Directory Password.

For more information see:
http://www.cites.illinois.edu/vpn/index.html

UIwpa2

UIwpa2 requires manual configuration from the user, isn't available in all campus locations, and isn't supported by all computers. However, if your system can connect to UIwpa2, you won't need to add QuickConnect or the CITES VPN to your connection process the way you do with UIUCnet Wireless.

If you're confident in your computer configuration skills, run a newer operating system with WPA2 support provided in both the system and your wireless network card and are in a location from which UIwpa2 is listed among the available wireless networks, then you may be a good candidate for UIwpa2.

http://www.cites.illinois.edu/wireless/wpa2/index.html

UIpublicWiFi

CITES now offers Public Wireless access within the LIS building. This is particularly useful if you have guests visiting GSLIS who do not have University NetIDs but would like to use their laptops on the Internet. Access is limited to general Internet services.

For more information see:
http://www.cites.illinois.edu/publicwireless/index.html

Short-term wireless guest accounts

If you have guests who need access to the wireless network or who need to use the VPN from locations outside of campus you can create short term accounts for them. They are usually limited to a three day access period.

Your guest account user name and password lets you connect to the campus network in two ways: through UIUCnet QuickConnect or through the CITES VPN.

QuickConnect will be a good solution for you if:
  • You are on campus.
  • You only need common Internet services: email, web browsing, and some IM clients.
  • You are using an older Mac computer (pre-OS X 10.2), an older Windows computer (pre-Windows 2000), or a handheld device (Palm or Windows CE/Windows Mobile).
The CITES VPN will be a good solution for you if:
  • You need to connect to UIUCnet from an off-campus location while you're visiting.
  • You need more security for the information you are sending across a wireless network.
  • You need to access types of networking that QuickConnect will not support.
