Community as Intellectual Space:
Aesthetics as Resistance: The Act of Community Building
4th Annual Symposium
June 13-15, 2008
La Estancia
2753 W. Division
Paseo Boricua, Chicago, Illinois, USA
About the Symposium
What is "Aesthetics as Resistance?"
Community Informatics Initiative (CII) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and the
Puerto Rican Cultural Center
(PRCC) invite you to join us as we engage in an active dialogue on art, identity, and cross-cultural community building with
community leaders, artists, educators, librarians, activists, students, and residents.
The vision at the PRCC has been and is to build community grounded in cultural practice. Our work surrounds us in our art:
from murals to poetry, music to the People’s Parade. These aesthetic practices represent deeply creative-and political-acts
to build community that draw on our local social ecology. Community building is, in itself, a collaborative aesthetic that transforms the
social, political, and educational.
CII and the PRCC invite you to participate in meaningful lived moments in the heart of Paseo Boricua as together we redefine knowledge.
