Intended audience:CPLA program candidates; librarians and information professionals needing training in planning and management of library buildings.

Purpose of the course: To familiarize the student with the basic principles of building planning and management within the context of the public library. Topics included are building maintenance and operational procedures, capital and facility development plans, building programs, construction process for new and remodeled buildings, life and safety issues in building operation and planning, technology planning, and post-occupancy evaluation. Upon completion the student be able to employ effective building maintenance and operation procedures, understand and prepare capital improvement and facility development plans, list procedures used in employing architectural, engineering, and consultant assistance in building maintenance and development programs, describe the planning and construction processes for new or renovated facilities, list issues involved in building operation and planning, and describe post-occupancy evaluation procedures.

Delivery format: The course will be conducted via Moodle, the same course management system used by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science online education program (LEEP). The course will consist of 6 live synchronous sessions of 2 hours each for a total of 12 direct contact hours. Students will also be expected to participate asynchronously during the 6 weeks via discussion boards, which will add another 2-3 contact hours to the course.

Technology Requirements: Participants will need a reliable Internet connection via modem, ISDN, DSL, cable or other dedicated connectivity. A 28.8 or higher speed modem and SLIP, PPP, or other TCP/IP connectivity is required. Software requirements include a Java enabled Web Browser, Real Player software, and Adobe Reader. Hardware requirements are: an IBM compatible Pentium II or greater (at least 400mhz) with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP - or - Macintosh with OS 8 (or a more recent MacOS); 128MB RAM memory; a sound card with speakers and/or earphones; and a color monitor with at least 800x600 resolution.
