Community Credit/Non-degree Students

GSLIS, in cooperation with the Office of Continuing Education, is pleased to be able to offer non-degree students an opportunity to take graduate level courses via the Academic Outreach Community Credit Program. Formal admission to the University is not necessary, but a bachelor's degree is required. Community credit students may take a maximum of 12 credit hours of GSLIS coursework. Permission to take additional credit hours may be granted in special circumstances (e.g., alums seeking professional development, school media endorsement), but please note that a maximum of 12 hours can be applied toward a degree upon matriculation.

If you are interested in taking a course in the fall semester, please submit a FALL 2009 Request to Enroll Form. The deadline for submission is August 7, 2009. A partial list of fall courses open to community credit students is now available. Additional courses will be added after degree-seeking students have registered. FALL 2009 Courses.
NOTE: You will be notified regarding approval to register after July 10. However, if you have requested a course that is not on the open list, your request will be placed on hold until the incoming LEEP class has registered in late July.

NEW COMMUNITY CREDIT STUDENTS: If you have misplaced your approval email, please review this page for important information about taking a course at GSLIS http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/oc/programs/cpd/Community_Credit/impt_info.html

Tuition for academic year (includes summer) 2008-2009 is $976 for two credit hours and $1952 for four credit hours. Tuition rates for academic year 2009-2010 are not available at this time.

If you have questions regarding the community credit option, contact Marianne Steadley, Continuing Professional Development Program Director, steadley@illinois.edu, 217-244-2751.

Note: If you're paying for a class out of your own pocket, don't forget to make use of the Lifelong Learning Tax Credit when you do your income tax at the end of the year. It allows you to take a tax credit for a portion of any money you spend on continuing education.
