Virtual Worlds CE SeriesContinuing education (CE) non-credit courses presented by the Illinois Alliance Library System and GSLIS for librarians, museum professionals, and others interested in virtual worldsBuilding Your Library in Second Life: An Applied ApproachThis course is intended for those interested in creating their library presence in SL. Each participant will be lent a small plot of land on which to develop a prototype for their SL library or museum. Instructors will focus on the information, skills, and SL utilities necessary to accomplish that task. Participants will also be given the opportunity to reinforce their learning through hands-on experiences that will result in a model for their SL library or museum. Week One: Environmental AwarenessHour one: Library or museum ownership in SL, Hour two: Libraries and Museums in SL Week Two: Technical Basics Hour one: Building and equipping your library or museum, Hour two: About land in SL Week Three: Creating Resources Hour one: SL content delivery methods, Hour two: Simple scripts to enhance information giving Week Four: Technical Basics part two Hour One: Introduction to objects, Hour two: Building theory and application Week Five: Let's build Hour one: Planning and building, Hour two: Applied building Week Six: Working with your patrons Hour One: Holding Presentations, Classes, Events - Best Practices, Hour two: Student Resource Projects Instructors: Krull Aeon (Matt Sanderson), Daisyblue Hefferman (Roberta Zerrahn), Sonja Morgwain (Sonja Morgan-Plummer) Audience: Open to anyone interested in setting up a library or a museum presence in Second Life. Students should have some experience navigating in Second Life. A pre-course orientation will be provided to those who need instruction on: adjusting preferences; adjusting and activating voice controls; inventory basics; avatar movement, positioning and control; in-world camera control; what is an object (prim); and unpacking boxes.
Dates and times: Course TechnologyThe two-hour synchronous sessions will meet online in Second Life. Participants will need a reliable Internet connection via DSL or cable in addition to the following hardware and software SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS. IMPORTANT: Please ensure you can meet these requirements before registering for a course. Check your system against the requirements carefully especially your graphics/video card.
