WELCOME

Welcome to GSLIS! The tools and resources on this page are meant to serve merely as an introduction to the materials available to you as an M.S. student as you plan your personalized program. GSLIS' exceptional curriculum is unique in that it only requires the completion of two required courses (LIS 501 and LIS 502) within the total 40 hours required to complete the M.S. As a result, students are free to design a program that includes courses taught by our renowned core and adjunct faculty specifically suited to their academic and professional goals. This individualized program can also be augmented with professional development and practical experiences available through the school and their numerous programs and resources.

Meeting with an Advisor

It is recommended that you initially consult with the Advising Coordinator to discuss your program and/or receive referrals to a faculty member whose area of teaching and interest align with your professional and academic aspirations.

Consultations can take place in person, over the phone or via email.
Please contact:

In addition, group advising sessions will be scheduled during orientation for incoming LEEP students and during LEEP on-campus sessions for ALL students and throughout the semester as necessary.

How can I specialize in a particular LIS area?

You are more than welcome to specialize in a variety of LIS areas in two different ways:

1) Customize your own program by selecting courses that meet individual professional goals and interests

2) Specialize in one of our four prescribed curriculum areas; K-12 certification and/or endorsement, Community Informatics, Data Curation or Special Collections. All four areas of specialization have required courses in addition to LIS 501 and LIS 502.

Talk to the Program Coordinators for one of these programs or the Advising Coordinator for more information!

How can I get practical experience while I am in school?

GSLIS provides a few options for gaining that valuable practical experience while enrolled in school. In addition, students may arrange practical work experience outside of GSLIS.

Practicum - 2 credit course consisting of 100 hours of work at an organization of your choice. (on-campus or LEEP)
Alternative Spring Break - one week of volunteer experience at an organization of your choice in Illinois, St. Louis, Minneapolis, or Washington, DC.
