Stodden appointed to International Mathematical Union committee

Associate Professor Victoria Stodden has been appointed to the International Mathematical Union’s (IMU) Committee on Electronic Information and Communication (CEIC). Her four-year term will span 2015 through 2018. 

The CEIC was created by the IMU Executive Committee in 1998 in response to changes in mathematics practice and publishing resulting from the proliferation of Internet-based communication. The CEIC acts as an advisory group to the Executive Committee, IMU, and the international mathematics community regarding best practices and means of adaptation in relation to changes in modes of communication.

Stodden also is a member of the Board of the Center for Open Science (COS), a nonprofit technology company founded in 2013 with a mission of increasing openness, integrity, and reproducibility in scientific research by providing free services and resources to scientists, publishers, and developers. Stodden’s term on the advisory board spans 2013 to 2015.

Fellow COS Board members include Alan G. Kraut, executive director of the Association for Psychological Science; Arthur Lupia, professor of political science at the University of Michigan; John P.A. Ioannidis, chair of disease prevention at Stanford University; Joshua M. Greenberg, director of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Digital Information Technology Program; and Marcia McNutt, editor-in-chief of Science magazine.

Stodden joined the GSLIS faculty in Fall 2014. She is a leading figure in the area of reproducibility in computational science, exploring how can we better ensure the reliability and usefulness of scientific results in the face of increasingly sophisticated computational approaches to research. Her work addresses a wide range of topics, including standards of openness for data and code sharing, legal and policy barriers to disseminating reproducible research, robustness in replicated findings, cyberinfrastructure to enable reproducibility, and scientific publishing practices. Stodden co-chairs the NSF Advisory Committee for CyberInfrastructure and is a member of the NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Advisory Committee. She also serves on the National Academies Committee on Responsible Science: Ensuring the Integrity of the Research Process.

Previously an assistant professor of statistics at Columbia University, Stodden taught courses in data science, reproducible research, and statistical theory and was affiliated with the Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering. She co-edited two books released this year, Privacy, Big Data, and the Public Good: Frameworks for Engagement published by Cambridge University Press and Implementing Reproducible Research published by Taylor & Francis. Stodden earned both her PhD in statistics and her law degree from Stanford University. She also holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of British Columbia and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Ottawa.

iSchool faculty and students will present their research at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2024), which will be held from May 11-16 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The conference, considered the most prestigious in the field of Human-Computer Interaction, attracts researchers and practitioners from around the globe. The theme for CHI 2024 is "Surfing the World."

iSchool researchers present at inaugural ASIS&T symposium

iSchool researchers will present their work at the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) Midwest Chapter Spring Symposium on April 26. The inaugural symposium will include talks by seventeen researchers from ten institutions across the Midwest region.
