iSchool scholarship recipient hopes to pay it forward

Sam Hwang

BS/IS student Sam Hwang is grateful to be the recipient of an iSchool scholarship. Hwang, a junior from Glenview, Illinois, decided to major in information sciences because of his interest in data science and data analytics. He is happy with his decision.

"The iSchool is great as it encourages both a collaborative and positive environment. Personally, I feel that the advisors have been wonderful in leading me on my journey and encouraging me to take harder classes in order to prepare for my future. In addition, there are iSchool events every so often to encourage career networking, career workshops, and even to encourage others in the iSchool major to get to know each other," he said.

According to Hwang, having a scholarship makes a "huge difference" because it relieves his financial burden.

"Being less stressed about paying for college meals, fees, and even rent will allow me to focus more on my academic studies and less about paying for my next meal," he said.

Outside of class, Hwang enjoys spending time in the gym, lifting weights, and playing volleyball or basketball as well as relaxing at his home in front of the television. After he graduates, he would like to work in a data analyst position and give back to his parents, who have "sacrificed a lot of their time and hard work in order to support me and my future."

"As the recipient of an iSchool scholarship, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the donors who have provided me with these funds. I hope to one day pay it forward," said Hwang. He also is grateful to his high school friend Kayla, who provided encouragement and served as his role model.
